Two years after the first film, Larry Daley has become a successful entrepreneur but returns to the American Museum of Natural History to find that most exhibits are being replaced by holograms and moved to the Smithsonian archives. When the mischievous monkey Dexter steals the magical Tablet of Ahkmenrah during the transfer, the entire Smithsonian—the world's largest museum complex—comes to life.
