(2004) is an intimate audio-visual tribute to Delta blues pioneer Robert Johnson . Released as a companion to the studio album Me and Mr. Johnson , this project captures Clapton performing Johnson’s catalogue in raw, diverse settings—from full-band rehearsals to haunting solo acoustic sets. Typically sold as a CD/DVD combo pack . The DVD includes 14–18 performances plus interviews where Clapton discusses Johnson’s massive influence on his life and the guitar craft. Recorded at Hook End Manor during tour rehearsals with a full electric band. Includes high-energy takes of "Kind Hearted Woman Blues" and "They're Red Hot".
Filmed at the Studios at Las Colinas. Highlights include "If I Had Possession Over Judgement Day" and "Stop Breakin' Down Blues".
While Me and Mr. Johnson was a polished studio effort, Sessions for Robert J is praised for its "white-knuckle" energy and more "earthy" feel.
The release includes five songs not found on the original studio album: "Sweet Home Chicago," "Terraplane Blues," "Ramblin' on My Mind," "Stones in My Passway," and "From Four Until Late".
The project is structured into four distinct segments, moving from electric ensemble performances to stripped-back solo versions that emulate Johnson's original 1930s style.
The most significant location, filmed at 508 Park Avenue . This was the original warehouse where Robert Johnson recorded his final legendary tracks in 1937. Clapton and Doyle Bramhall II perform acoustic duets here, including "Terraplane Blues".
