The screen went black. A single line of text appeared in stark white: [Handcuffs clicking into place]

But as the scene shifted to the crime scene, something was wrong. Miller leaned in. A line appeared in the subtitle file that wasn't in the script. [Sound of footsteps behind you] The screen went black

On screen, Lieutenant Columbo—in that iconic, rumpled raincoat—didn't look at the suspect. He turned his head and looked directly into the camera. The subtitle at the bottom of the screen changed: COLUMBO: Just one more thing, Mr. Miller. Miller leaned in

He clicked play. On screen, the investigator Ken Franklin was murdering his victim. Miller tapped his keyboard, timing the text.

Miller froze. He didn't hear anything in his headphones. He checked the source code. The line was hard-coded into the file, but it didn't match the audio. He hit the spacebar to pause, but the video kept running.

Miller backed his chair away from the desk. He had stolen the master tapes to sell on the black market, replacing them with clever fakes. No one could have known.
